Notice the proportional increase in size from the larger and longer building compared to the smaller and shorter building: the road accounts for 8.3% extra size for the 5圆, but 16.7% for the 3x2. Meanwhile, a smaller building, say 3x2 in size will need one road to connect it and take up 7 tiles. a 5圆 building will need two and a half extra roads added to its total size, so it effectively takes up 32.5 tiles, even though the building itself is only 30 tiles. If a building requires roads, then the ideal road placement of it should be half the shorter side length, as you can imagine in the perfect scene where two buildings are sandwiched in between a stretch of road. The standard way of calculating the efficiency of a building is (production and boosts)/building size.

I’m not going to go over this in great detail, because this is totally up to you, and there are sheets comparing these building efficiencies anyway. For the advanced city, there are four types of buildings you need in your city: resource-producing buildings (for growth), production buildings (for quests and possibly production), military buildings (to train units/Alcatraz-produce them and for quests), and Great Buildings which are also vital for growth.
